Services to adults: Generic service

Overview
Beacon’s generic counselling service to adults was the first service that Beacon set up, which was in 1984. The service started with 1 volunteer counsellor and 1 volunteer receptionist, and provides 1-1 counselling to adults aged 18 or more. Today, the service provides counselling to over 500 people from all over the borough of Stockport and into parts of Cheshire and Manchester.

Outcomes
People that use the service tell us they benefit from increased confidence and self-esteem, improved relationships with others, and better coping skills for future challenges. Our monitoring tools back this up and show that people have reduced levels of depression, anxiety, and distress, and raised levels of well-being.

Funding
The service relies on donations from clients, fundraising events, gift aid, and other donations to keep it going, and Beacon also receives a small grant from NHS Stockport. Without these sources of income, and the other funding the charity receives, this service would close.
